Research Project 1.1

Student Name: Alex Coe

Research Project

1.1 My FMP

Medium

(eg. film, graphic design)

The medium I will be researching is Graphic design. a craft where professionals create visual content to communicate messages. By applying visual hierarchy and page layout techniques, designers use typography and pictures to meet users' specific needs and focus on the logic of displaying elements in interactive designs, to optimize the user experience. You will see it everywhere in daily life from something as simple as a small logo on your computer to massive structures for advertising. There really is no limit to where graphic design is.

Due to the medium being so large there are many aspects of it and with those aspects there are rules…

  • Rule 1 - Always be consistent. Use a regular format and design for all your branded materials.

  • Rule 2 – Don't use too many fonts.

  • Rule 3 - Don't use too many colours either.

  • Rule 4 - Scale image proportions correctly.

  • Rule 5 - Align design elements correctly.

  • Rule 6 – White space is important.

And by applying each rule to your graphic design work, It should always look pleasing to the eye while still being informative.

Why

I would like to further my skills in graphic design as I believe it could be a crucial stepping stone for me to get into the world of graphic design.

Inspiration

Upon looking at many graphic design portfolios, I have learned that many of them have packaging sets and clothing designs in their early portfolios. I have seen many small creators, such as “h6n3y”, who started as an instagram meme page and still sort of is but grew into what he liked doing (creating clothing designs and accessories). I have also seen some graphic designers start with creating designs for clothing, an example being “GriffinGFX” who has stated in a video that he initially started with clothing designs.

Key ideas

  • Minimalist designs

  • Out line art

  • 80s / 90s Aesthetic

  • Retro styling
